VOSTOK company story starts back in 1942, when one of the Moscow watch-making plants has been evacuated from Moscow to a little town Chistopol located on the Kama River. Defense equipment was the only company output during war years, but as soon as the war was over VOSTOK started to make mechanical wrist watches - the main production item ever since. In 1965 Vostok company was appointed an official supplier of watches for the Defense Department of the Soviet Union. This year marks the creation of the world-famous "Komandirskie" ("Commander") watch. Military watch grew very popular even with people who were unaware which end of the gun bullet comes off, mainly due to high precision, excessive reliability and durability. The appearance of the watch also contributes to its appeal - functional and clear-cut design invoked the feeling of belonging to the tough world of combat professional. The experience which VOSTOK gained through development of the army watch was the foundation of our next special watch - "Amphibian". This impressive timepiece in stainless-steel case endured the depth of 200 meters - kind of a wrist submarine. Success of the professional watches determined the company's present philosophy - to create mechanical watches maintaining precise timekeeping at any temperature, in any environment, surviving heavy pressure and blows. I've purchased a few Vostoks in the past but it has been several years. Maybe it is just that I've aligned my expectations closer to reality, but this Amphibia is not what I remember. Like I have read elsewhere, it is a vintage watch being produced in the modern era and you have to put everything about the watch into that context. Once you realize that you can then appreciate how much of a watch you really get for the price.Chief negative point seems to be lume, and yes, it is nowhere near Seiko lume...but a lot of watches aren't. I'm actually surprised with the lume on this watch. Maybe the factory has changed formula or added another layer or two, but I can go outside and come back in and notice a glow. I can also easily see the lume at bedtime once my eyes have adjusted to the dark... and can still read the time 8 hours later.Accuracy is as expected and well within Vostok's posted specs. Mine is about +14 s/d and will likely settle down as the movement ages. Regardless, I'm not expecting COSC or quartz accuracy. It has taken close to 2 decades and 2 years in watchmaking school to get over my obsession with accuracy. I set this watch a minute slow and when it is a minute fast I repeat.The lack of a quick change date is another non-issue when you realize you can just roll the time back a few hours, then advance and the date will roll over.Other things like acrylic crystal and friction bi-directional bezel and more nods to the vintage era of watches and add to the quirkiness of the watch. And with so many case, dial and strap options out there (across the entire Vostok line) it shouldn't be difficult to find something you like.
